FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and is a term used for moving files between your computer and another computer or server over the Internet. There are more detailed explanations available that also go into the pro's and con's of FTP but FTP is used extensively for up and downloading of files.

To transfer files using FTP you will need a FTP Software package. I use Filezilla which is an Open Source License and comes from Mozilla who also do Firefox which is a browser alternative to Internet Explorer.

As well as the FTP software you will need an FTP Account with the Web Host or other destination. You will set this up when you sign up with a Web Host.Commonly they will provide you with an address, username and password. These are entered into your FTP software.

Typically the address will be ftp.yourwebhostname.co.uk or an IP address 216.239.138.xx

You may find that you Web Host provides a File Management System where you can upload your files, I prefer to use FTP as I am also able to download files and change the File and Folders Permissions easily.
